I thought I would try making some blacksmith hammers as part of an SCA A&S challenge. The first attempt was a total failure. I had found some tool steel block cut-offs at a local Metal Supplier, which I thought would work well. Nope! The tool steel alloy was way too tough for forging. I found a 1-1/4″ drive shaft in my metal pile that ended up working very well.

An old driveshaft worked well for the hammerheads
Starting the forge
Heating the heads up needed a lot of head. I made a makeshift oven for the forge
I made up some special tongs to get the hammer heads in and out of the forge

Punching the hole through the head

Finally worked a hole through
Upsetting the hammerhead to make it thicker

Lots of shaping
Square-face hammerhead
Round-face hammerhead

It was hard to getthe holes centered

Cooling the heads after hardening the faces
Making handles from an ash log

Finished hammers
